Loretta Young by casparofambrose

/ / ©2009-2015 casparofambrose
I’ve only seen one of Loretta’s films but when I accidentally stumbled across this [link] picture I couldn’t pass it up. I was initially drawn to it because of her wistful expression. What an intriguing look in her eyes…almost vulnerable. I noticed it had a lot of challenges like large areas of grey and the difficult-looking hand (fantastic, because I need to practice my greys and I rarely do hands) but that it still had so many good elements like the strong lighting, which was greatly lacking in my last portrait.

This time the reference turned out to be everything I thought it would be – simultaneously fun and challenging. Very challenging. It was a lot of work and I’m hoping it shows. I put time into stupid background things that I don’t usually care about.

Still trying to work on my artist’s signature. I noticed it is virtually invisible on most of my pieces so I tried to make a conscious effort to sign it a bit bigger this time. XD Laurence Olivier is my next subject.

I love love love this drawing because of mostly, the lighting on the face, neck and hand. The sequins slightly blurry. Your artistry is that worthy of a person not nearly as young as you. Awesome!!

wow, her hand is flawless.
Personally I would have blended the hair a just a bit more evenly, but the detail you've done on her face is so perfect!!! especially the expression you've shown through the muscles in her forehead. Beautiful!

Sorry, this is a little bit late, but thank you very much! This was a transition picture for me - one where I started trying bigger things - but overall I wanted to get her expression down and not ruin the hand, so I'm glad to hear that!

Thank you so very much! The realism is mostly lots of hours and layers of shading to create depth. And, oh gosh, there are a lot of things I can't draw. It took me awhile to be able to do portraits, but I wanted to do them and I practiced until I could. I'm very flattered!

Really sorry for the lateness, by the way.

Beautiful drawings!! I love the details you put in the hair and I envy you for your patience to actually do that. I bet if you updated this with increased contrast like your drawing of Gene Tierney it would look even better!

Thanks very much! And thanks for the favorite! As for patience, I really don't have a whole lot of it, haha, but even those with the thinnest patience can discipline themselves to put hours into a drawing if they're motivated enough, I think.

You're welcome and totally deserve it!

You'd think so, indeed. I'm actually quite patient, and my drawings can take upward of 50 or 60 hours, but hair just KILLS me!

:aww:

50-60 hours…I can definitely believe that. I just took a peek at your gallery and it is breathtaking! That texture you’re getting in your shading looks beautiful combined with the hyper-realism. You’d never know hair gives you trouble. Hair gives me an awful lot of hell too, and I usually dread it and save it for second to last (the background being last), but because it gives me trouble, I go slower and work harder on it and as a result it usually turns out alright.

Thank you! I'm flattered. :aww: I've considered doing something like that, but I just don't know how to put it together and make it easy to understand or cohesive. You're my second request, however, so this is giving me more incentive to try sometime! Oh, and thank you for the favorite as well!

Well, thank you! I adore the look. I really like the oddly thin eyebrows that a lot of women wore in the 30's. It gave an almost melancholy look to the eye. (:
