Louise Brooks by casparofambrose

/ / ©2011-2015 casparofambrose
I finished this back in September of 2010 but was never satisfied with it. I'll be finishing my next portrait soon, though, so I figured it was time this one was posted.

I ended up working on parts of this during a recovery from getting my wisdom teeth out and I probably shouldn't have. =P I spent too much time on the hair and that takes the attention - not what I intended. I'm not pleased with the background either, which looked fantastic composition-wise in the reference but seems to just distractingly cut the drawing into slices. But I still like the image a lot. Louise had a strong air about her in photographs that was fun to try to recreate.

Mechanical pencil (#2 lead), 5B - 8B pencil, q-tips, Kleenex, and white vinyl eraser on 19” X 24” bristol paper. Also – I gave the background a quick thin layer of warm gray prismacolor.

I do not see what you're talking about, this looks like a picture. But you can see it in real life. All artists are quite critical of their own work. You know what areas you had trouble with and see the inaccuracies afterward!

How in the hell did you get the hair to glow so radiantly?

I think the hair on this one is the only thing in the picture that has pure white highlights, which might be partially why it creates the illusion of a glow (as nothing else in the image is quite as bright).

I try to just keep the brightest highlights as pure as I can, meaning no pencil should ever touch it. Even erased pencil leaves the paper slightly sullied and doesn't have the same brightness that unused paper does. I used a q-tip on this one to blend the edges of the highlights for a softer effect. Hope that makes sense!

Makes perfect sense. I try to use the same technique, but I've never reached such beautiful results as this. You've mastered it.

This is stunning, her hair looks amazing! Since Louise Brooks is often remembered for her flapper hairstyle, just say the extreme detail on her hair was intentional and symbolic, and call it good! =P

Thank you so much! =D I've actually warmed up to this one in recent times, and I definitely see what you mean about the hair - I don't know why I didn't just decide it will have to pass as symbolic from the beginning. =P

It's really amazing and you're right, her hair catches the viewer's attention a lot. But so do her eyes too. Maybe the dark area under her left eyes is a little too dark?
How did you get the deep black on her hair? Using a 8B pencil? Does it "shine" a bit on the paper?

Thank you very much! Yes, the hair was done almost entirely in 8B pencil, and it does give off a lot of shine when the picture is viewed at different angles.
